The Idea

Through a chance conversation, university friends Katharina and Christian both realized they shared an interest in craft beer. She - having just come from Australia and he - looking for a father/son hobby. A few beers into the evening and decided to see how far they could get with making their own. A few weeks later, they both met brewmaster Michael and it was love... or should we say "brew" at first sight.

The Name

These three decided on the weirdest name possible: "BRLO" - the old-Slavic origin of the name of Berlin, which funnily enough meant "swamp land".

(To date, we've heard 17,038 variations of it and have since decided it's pronounced however you want it to be.)

The First Brew

Thanks to the VLB letting us use their equipment, we were finally able to try out the recipes we’d been working on for months. Out of that was born our Pale Ale, and the recipe hasn’t changed since.

The Babies

The first two beers are out and BRLO is seeing the light of day. We celebrated the birth of our Helles and Pale Ale (which we brewed in our partner breweries Neuzelle and Landsberg) by drinking a lot of Helles and Pale Ale. Kind of counterproductive, but hey... we were excited.

The Coming Out Party

Our third style, the Baltic Porter is released. We naturally decide to throw a party at Kaschk – one of our first customers and ironically our unofficial office during those days. Some of us are still hungover.

The Pop-Up

Our legendary pop-up beergarden during the Berlin Beer Week next to Platoon gave us great ideas - the biggest of which was a crazy idea about an area called "Gleisdreieck"...

June 2, 2015

The Empty Space

We find the perfect spot for our new home in the middle of Berlin at Gleisdreieck in the neighborhood of Kreuzberg . The perfect amount of outdoor space, urban feel and in the shadow of two U-Bahn stations. The only problem, however, was that the space would be built on in the future, so we did what any rational company would do and simply bought 38 used shipping containers to be up-cycled into our new home.

The Gastronomy

Funnily enough, bidding on the same Gleis space was Chef Ben Pommer, who was looking for a spot for his new gastronomic concept and we all decided that we should all work together. With a background in working in Michelin-starred restaurants, Ben brought not only his expertise, but a radical idea of creating the most non-traditional brewhouse – which, in German means “lots of meat” – by making vegetables the focus.

The Construction Site Beergarden

As if things weren’t crazy enough, we decided to build a temporary beergarden both in the middle of construction and while the European World Cup was taking place. This also provided us the chance to try our hand at gastronomy.

The Brewery Set-Up

Michael calls this his “most exciting day” and it’s easy to see why. Numerous trucks arrive with brand new brewing equipment. And finally, after almost 12 months of design meetings, construction and manpower, we can now call ourselves a “brewery”.

Once a wasteland, but now - a few months later and after a 4-week test run - our own brewery and restaurant! As many drinks poured as there were tears spilled. And in 100 years, it will still be one of the greatest nights of our lives.

The Summer of '17

In May, our official beergarden – built to resemble a hops field (with real hops!) is finally open. We add an ice cream stand, an outdoor snack bar, a sandbox and beach chairs. With, like, a gazillion beers sold, we apparently are now catering to a very thirsty monster!

The Growth

The team continues to grow and we run out of office space! Fortunately, our entire operation is built out of shipping containers, so we just buy a few more.

The Core Range

We are now producing 7 permanent BRLO beers: Baltic Porter, Pale Ale, Helles, Berliner Weisse, German IPA, Redlight Ale and Naked... in addition to numerous seasonals and collaborations.

What fun is having a cool outdoor space without inviting your beer friends? 11 international breweries show up with their beers and we spend a gorgeous weekend in June trying all of them.

The Awards

We were honored to receive The Berliner Scene Restaurant at Berlin Masterchefs, Best Beer Concept Fizzz Award and the only brewery in the Gault Millaut.

The 3rd Birthday

3 years of BRLO! We were so busy brewing beer that we almost forgot about it. Fortunately, we have the perfect place for a party (see previous photos) and we happen to make beer, so it was - once again - a day/night/early morning to remember.

November 11, 2017

The Second Location

More BRLO is needed and we realize that we needed to step up our production game and move it to Berlin entirely. So luckily we met Ivan who runs the Craft Zentrum Berlin in Spandau where we will be brewing from now on next to other amazing brewers.

The Run the Jewels

Grammy nominated American hip-hop duo Run the Jewels names BRLO as the maker of of their CBD-based beer called “Legend Has it Pils”. A release party is held in the beergarden, our biggest day in history!

We´re moving into the 6th floor of the KaDeWe with BRLO CHICKEN & BEER! There is rotisserie chicken, caesar salad, fried chicken and eight beers on tab. To have the courage to be the first one in the department store to ever paint a ceiling black we need to drink a lot of the official KaDeWe pilsner which is brewed by us. But it was all worth it and the ZITTY names us the best new opening in the district of Schöneberg in 2018!

World Cup 2018

We watched countless hours of soccer, grilled numerous sausages and sold more beers than we can count. It was an unpredictable world cup full of emotions.
