SUMMER (BR)LOVING, HAD US A BLAST
Fate? Mere coincidence? Whatever your viewpoint we can all agree that life weaves is magic in mysterious ways. Unbeknownst to us at the time, a few months after breaking in to stumbling upon this derelict site at Gleisdreieck for a guerilla photo shoot we would be laying down the foundations of our summer Biergarden and Brwhouse. This photograph is pretty symbolic as it documents the beginning of a whirlwind love affair with this plot of land. Which at times has felt, as the picture suggests, like pushing a trolley without wheels through mounds of rubble.
As I was the man on the ground for much of the summer I have been given the unenviable task of capturing the essence of the B(r)austelle in a few short words. Let me start with a quote “Life moves pretty fast, If you don’t stop to look around once in a while you could miss it”. Yes, Ferris Bueller had some sage wisdom which succinctly sums up my feelings. As I peer out my office window at a rubble strewn building site with a freshly poured beer from the bar below, it is hard to believe that mere months ago this was the site of a living, breathing Biergarden. A greater shock to the system, I suppose, is finally being inside a structure with four solid walls.
The pace of life at the Braustelle has been supersonic. Watching a pile of shipping containers slowly and steadily transform into a loose structure, then a functioning brewery, then a bar and restaurant has been a surreal experience. Of course, there is still much work to be done before the grand opening of our new place. But I think it is only right that we take the time now to reflect upon our humble little summer home at Gleisdreieck and the project which has defined 2016 for all of us at BRLO.
For us it was our first foray into a full on gastronomy operation. A new system of operation, a new team, a new venue. This would be considered an ambitious project during an ordinary summer, but this was no ordinary summer. This was the summer of the EM. As I learned in June, football is not just 22 men kicking a ball on a field, no, in Germany it is a cultural institution and it brings with it an incredible ambience which seeps into the soul of the city. I will never forget those sweltering days in the Biergarten. The endless queues of guests anxiously waiting on tapped beers which were flowing uninterrupted, every nook, cranny, and perch occupied by fans, the jubilation of the wins , the resulting afterparties, the long nights followed by the crisp Feierabendbeers, the comradery of the new team, the support of the locals, the ever changing weather.
Operating outdoors was on ongoing battle against the elements. We experienced it all: monsoon, thunderstorm, searing heat, gale force winds, you name it. We braved the figurative storm of the European championships as well as the real deal on occasion. Nothing could dampen our spirits as there was always something which gave us a jolt. Kitchen takeovers, Canada day revelry, countless portions of ribs and sandwiches, copious amounts of Helles and SPRITZ!, rogue bicycles, and parties galore. The beergarden was never a dull place.
Having witnessed the Brwhouse flourish from a plot of barren land to a Biergarden so filled with life I ,along with team, became quite attached. Disassembling the B(r)austelle was a seminal moment and really made it hit home that the Summer and our time on this little pop up project had well and truly come to an end. We all took a bit of solace in the fact that it was only goodbye for the time being as the Biergarten will be back once again next Summer. Bigger, bolder, and better than before.
We are tremendously proud of what we managed to achieve this year, for the memories we have been part of, for the friends which we’ve made along the way and to all of our loyal customers for fulfilling a long term dream of ours. As we look to opening up our BRWHOUSE we know that this is just the beginning of a wonderful journey.
